SUMMARY:2026 August Preparedness Canning
DESCRIPTION:2026 August Preparedness – Happy August! \nHopefully everyone is enjoying a safe summer. As the summer rolls on\, it is time to start thinking about how to preserve the extra bounty from our home gardens\, or getting the summers best\, in season\, fruits and vegetables from the various markets. \nSometimes it’s not just the fruits and vegetables we want to can. Perhaps you would like to can meats of differing types: beef\, poultry\, pork or seafoods. These are all great to have on your shelf because they are fully cooked when opened\, and ready to use. This is such a convenient time saver! Another great advantage is if the power goes out\, you don’t need to worry about losing all your expensive meat that’s in the freezer. \nFor those that are unfamiliar with home canning\, it really isn’t that hard. If done properly there is no need to fear the quality of the food\, AND you know what is and isn’t in it. Stocking up on fruits\, vegetables and meats during holiday sales is so rewarding because it is a great way to boost your food storage. \nThere are two attachments with the newsletter this month. One is the basic guidelines for pressure canning and the other has the basic guidelines for water bath canning. What you are canning determines which method to use. Neither one is particularly hard\, just the right tools\, time and effort are needed. \nClick here for Pressure Canning \nClick here for Water Bath Canning \nIf you have questions or concerns about any of these things\, please reach out to your Ward Preparedness Specialist. SUMMARY:2026 July Preparedness - Preparativos para Julio
DESCRIPTION:Happy July! \n\n\nHopefully everyone is enjoying the 250th anniversary of our great nation. It was founded on God given principles and special men and women were inspired from on high in order to create this nation. It was the creation of this nation that allowed for the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. \nIn our articles\, we have discussed many topics concerning food storage and preparedness. But one thing we haven’t addressed is what to store all this food storage in. Storage containers are not all the same\, and some are not safe for long term storage\, and some should never be used. Below is information on what can be used and what to always avoid and never use. It’s also important to remember even safe containers have some limitations and best uses. \nSafe Containers \nGlass Bottles: Foods stored in glass should be stored in a dark area. If this is not possible\, store bottles in a cardboard box or wrap in aluminum foil. Light will increase the rate at which food quality is lost. Glass containers are rodent and insect proof and when properly sealed will not allow air or fumes to degrade the products stored. \nMetal cans: Cans are a great storage option\, especially in areas that are prone to flooding. After a flood\, it is easy to disinfect the can while still protecting the food inside. Cans will rust in humid areas and should be stored with care and rotated often under these circumstances. Metal cans are airtight\, as well as rodent and insect proof. \nPlastic buckets or bottles: Only food grade plastic containers should be used for storage. Other plastics have been manufactured using chemicals which can be toxic. If you are unsure\, check with the supplier or manufacturer before storing food. Determined rodents have been known to enjoy a feast which was stored in plastic containers. \nKnow the codes for safe-to-use storage options: \n\nThe Cup and Fork Symbol: This universal logo guarantees the material is safe for food and beverages.\nPlastic Resin Codes: Check the bottom of the container for a triangle recycling symbol. Food-safe plastics are typically marked with numbers 1\, 2\, 4\, or 5.\n1 (PETE): Best for single-use bottles; do not reuse.\n2 (HDPE): Ideal and highly stable for long-term food storage (e.g.\, bulk bins\, milk jugs)\n4 (LDPE): Safe and commonly used for food bags and squeeze bottles.\n5 (PP): Safe\, heat-resistant\, and ideal for reusable containers.\nLook for printed phrases like “Food Grade\,” “FDA Compliant\,” or “USDA Approved.”\n\nKnow what to avoid: \n\nRecycling Codes 3 and 6: Never use containers marked with 3 (PVC) or 6 (Polystyrene) for food storage\, as they can leach toxic chemicals.\nCode 7 (Other) with a BPA Warning: While some polycarbonates are code 7\, they should be avoided unless explicitly labeled “BPA-Free.”\nUnknown or Unmarked Buckets: If you are repurposing a plastic bucket\, avoid it unless it has the cup and fork symbol or “food-grade” printed on it. Buckets used for paints\, chemicals\, or detergents are never safe for food\, even after washing.\n\nMylar bags: Mylar will protect food from contamination from air and other fumes and are light weight for carrying in an emergency. They will protect against light damage. They are very susceptible to rodent damage\, can be easily punctured and if not vacuum sealed “sweating” can occur within the pouch. \nOriginal store packaging: When possible\, food should be stored in the original container. This will preserve the “use by” date and also any preparation instructions. Place items packaged in cardboard in another container such as a bucket to increase protection. Use packing tape to seal the ends of boxes of pastas\, cereals\, and other easily infested items. If an infestation occurs\, the pests cannot get into the protected boxes and if a box came from the manufacturer infested\, then critters cannot get out and infest other items. \nUnsafe Containers \nPlastic bags: Plastic bags meant for trash or garden use have been chemically treated. These chemicals can be toxic. \nPaper: Paper will absorb moisture in the air which can then be transferred to your food\, spoiling it. Pests and rodents love paper\, an easy meal! \nCardboard: A cardboard box is a good place to store items in their original containers but not as your primary container. Cardboard\, like paper\, will absorb moisture in the air and is an easy target for pests. \nWhen repackaging or breaking down bulk items for storage it is important to use a moisture absorbing packet and oxygen absorbing packet. Verify the size of the container does not exceed the amount the packets can absorb. Packets come in different sizes\, but you can add 2 packets to make up the difference if you are unsure. \nAs always\, here are links for great information for gardening and general preparedness: \nCompanion Planting Chart and Guide for Vegetable Gardens (thespruce.com) \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nhttps://gilbertprepared.org/72-hour-kits/  \nMay the Lord bless each of us in our efforts as we try to listen and obey. \n— \n¡Feliz julio! \nComo siempre\, aquí hay enlaces para obtener excelente información sobre jardinería y preparación general: \nCuadro complementario de plantación y guía para huertos (thespruce.com) \nCalendario de siembra de hortalizas para el condado de Maricopa (arizona.edu) \nCompanion Planting Chart and Guide for Vegetable Gardens (thespruce.com) \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nhttps://gilbertprepared.org/72-hour-kits/ \nQue el Señor nos bendiga a cada uno de nosotros en nuestros esfuerzos al tratar de \n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n\n	Related

SUMMARY:2026 June Preparedness - Preparativos para Junio
DESCRIPTION:2026 June Preparedness \nHave you ever had one of those moments where you ask yourself\, “Why did I do that?” or “Why did I say that?” or one more\, “Why didn’t I follow the instructions?”. Let’s focus a little on the last one. We as members of the church have been counseled and instructed for decades to be prepared. We’ve heard it so much and for so long that when we hear the topic our ears turn off. We hope you don’t turn a blind eye and deaf ear this time. There are so many phases of preparedness it is difficult to capture them all here\, in this article. Everyone is at a different location on the preparedness path\, so we will focus on where to start and how to start. Those of you that have started\, please continue reading\, you may find ideas to help you from where you are currently. \nOk\, where do I start? The best place to start is to make a plan\, nothing fancy\, just a basic plan. It can be updated and expanded later\, after you get the hang of things. Plans often start with the what do we have now column and the what do we need column. Just a simple basic inventory. We would like everyone to get started on a three month supply\, but maybe that isn’t feasible for you in your current situation. If finances are tight\, don’t be embarrassed\, be truly grateful and thank Heavenly Father for all that you have.  He loves you and will bless your efforts\, but you have to be putting in the effort. \nThis is how simple it really is. The next time you go to the store and lets say you need a can of refried beans\, put two in the cart. Now when you get home you have an extra can of refried beans. That’s it\, that’s all there is to it. If you do that each time you go to the store and add an extra can or package of one or two things\, you are doing it and moving in the right direction. Don’t try to fill your pantry all at once\, just do small steps at a time. \nI recently read an article in the “Meridian Magazine”\, “You Are Not Too Broke to Prepare”\, by Carolyn Nicolaysen – May 19\, 2026. Here are some ideas she listed to help us in our quest\, “So how do we build food storage? One small step at a time. Do not become discouraged if you cannot fill your shopping cart with pantry items all at once. Consistency matters far more than speed. Consider the following practical suggestions”: \n\nKnow which stores offer rain checks. Always ask for one when shelves are empty of sale items\, though some seasonal products may be excluded.\nAsk whether stores price match competitors. This can save both time and fuel while helping you maximize savings.\nLearn store sales cycles. Grocery stores often begin new sales midweek\, while pharmacy chains may start sales on Sundays. Understanding sale timing can help you secure pantry staples at the best prices.\nSign up for customer rewards programs. Loyalty cards often provide discounts unavailable to nonmembers.\nTrack prices. Keep a notebook or binder with common grocery prices at stores you frequent. Over time\, you will learn what constitutes a true bargain. Involving older children can also teach them wise shopping habits.\nRemember seasonal sales. Many items follow predictable sale patterns. Cranberry sauce\, pumpkin\, and condensed milk\, for example\, are deeply discounted during the holidays but useful year-round.\nUse coupons wisely. Coupons can often be found in newspapers\, weekly mailers\, and local advertisements.\nCook from scratch whenever possible. Homemade bread\, cookies\, soups\, and casseroles are often far less expensive and healthier than packaged convenience foods.\nTake meals and drinks with you when traveling or attending activities. Packing lunches can significantly reduce spending.\nConsider breakfast for dinner. Meals such as eggs\, pancakes\, hash browns\, and fruit are inexpensive\, nutritious\, and family friendly. A dinner of eggs\, hash browns\, applesauce and juice made from scratch costs less than a dollar per person. The benefits\, save money\, no added preservatives\, eggs are a complete protein and kids love it.\nEat dinner at home more often. If you enjoy date nights\, consider eating at home first and going out for dessert or a treat afterward. If you want to eat out occasionally\, find out what nights your favorite hangouts have special deals or if they have hours with reduced pricing.\nLearn basic cooking skills. A few simple techniques can greatly reduce reliance on costly prepared foods. Learn to cook from scratch. Watch cooking shows\, ask skilled friends or family for tips\, and practice a few basics. Homemade meals are often far less expensive than prepared foods.\nSave leftover ingredients. Extra vegetables can often be chopped and frozen for later use in soups\, casseroles\, and stews.\nUse leftovers creatively. Leftover meats can become tacos\, soups\, casseroles\, salads\, or sandwiches instead of being discarded.\nNever turn down free produce. Excess garden vegetables and fruit can often be canned\, frozen\, or shared.\nPrepare extra baked goods and freeze them. Homemade breads\, cakes\, and muffins freeze well and save money later.\nReduce reliance on boxed breakfast cereals. Oatmeal\, eggs\, pancakes\, and toast are far more economical.\nPurchase larger packages when practical. Bulk buying is often more cost effective.\nStretch expensive foods. Instead of serving several strips of bacon or multiple sausage links per person\, cut them into smaller pieces and mix them into eggs or casseroles for flavor\, leaving half for another meal.\nRepackage snacks yourself. Large bags of chips or crackers are often cheaper than individual servings. Repackage into reusable containers for school and work lunches.\nCombine cereals. Mixing less expensive cereals with favorite name brands can reduce costs while maintaining flavor.\nPrepare economical meals several nights a week. Pasta\, soups\, fried rice\, homemade pizza\, and simple casseroles can stretch the food budget considerably.”\n\nHere are some great thoughts from Former Relief Society General President Sister Barbara B. Smith\, to help us in our preparedness. “Life is made up of small daily acts. Savings in food budgets come by pennies\, not only by dollars. Clothing budgets are cut by mending stitch by stitch\, seam by seam. Houses are kept in good repair nail by nail. Provident homes come not by decree or by broad brushstroke. Provident homes come from small acts performed well day after day. When we see in our minds the great vision\, then we discipline ourselves by steady\, small steps that make it happen.” (Ensign\, Nov. 1980\, p. 86.). Here are links for great information for gardening and general preparedness: \n\nCompanion Planting Chart and Guide for Vegetable Gardens (thespruce.com)\nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu)\nhttps://gilbertprepared.org/72-hour-kits/\n\nMay the Lord bless each of us in our efforts as we try to listen and obey. 86). SUMMARY:2026 April Preparedness - Preparación para abril
DESCRIPTION:Hopefully\, during the month of March you were able to plan your garden and plant. If not\, don’t despair! It may be too late to plant seeds\, but you still have time to get some plants from a nursery and plant them. Did you know some vegetables and herbs like to be by each other? This is called companion planting. Here is a link to a website that talks about this subject. There are a lot of adds\, but the information is good. Or you can search it out on your own. \nCompanion Planting Chart and Guide for Vegetable Gardens (thespruce.com) \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nOne item that should be at the top of your priority list is 72 hour kits. If you haven’t updated yours in a while\, take some time this month and make sure everything is current and all clothes fit. Keep in mind the kids grow and what was packed six months ago may not fit anymore. If you need help with ideas for putting your kits together or updating\, please check out the 72 hour kit section the website: \nhttps://gilbertprepared.org/72-hour-kits/ \nHere are some great thoughts from Elder Bednar to help us in our spiritual preparedness: \nWe Will Prove Them Herewith | David A. Bednar | October 2020YouTube · General Conference of The Church of Jesus ChristOct 4\, 2020 \n“Some Church members opine that emergency plans and supplies\, food storage\, and 72-hour kits must not be important anymore because the Brethren have not spoken recently and extensively about these and related topics in general conference. But repeated admonitions to prepare have been proclaimed by leaders of the Church for decades. The consistency of prophetic counsel over time creates a powerful concert of clarity and a warning volume far louder than solo performances can ever produce. Just as challenging times reveal inadequacies in temporal preparedness\, so too the maladies of spiritual casualness and complacency inflict their most detrimental effects during difficult trials…Thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line\, precept upon precept\, here a little and there a little; and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts\, and lend an ear unto my counsel\, for they shall learn wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I will give more. I invite each of us to “consider [our] ways” and “examine [ourselves]\, whether [we] be in the faith; [and] prove [our] own selves.” What have we learned during these recent months of lifestyle adjustments and restrictions? What do we need to improve in our lives spiritually\, physically\, socially\, emotionally\, and intellectually? Now is the time to prepare and prove ourselves willing and able to do all things whatsoever the Lord our God shall command us.” \n  \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n\n	Related

SUMMARY:2025 November: Power Preparedness - Preparación energética
DESCRIPTION:This past month\, our valley experienced a couple of big storms. As we all know\, power outages can happen anytime—whether from weather or other unexpected causes. It’s always a good idea to be prepared before they happen! Here are a few helpful tips from the iwillprepare.com website. \nWhat to do BEFORE the Power Goes Out: Power outages are one of the most frequently occurring emergencies. They also frequently accompany many natural and other disasters and emergencies. Long-term power outages may also lead to other utility outages. (i.e. Our water supply depends on pumps powered by electricity. If backup power runs out\, so will the water). \nPrepare for a potential power outage by doing the following: \n\nHave a supply of easy to find flashlights and fresh batteries on-hand.\nProtect your sensitive electronics by having them connected to surge protectors and UPS’s (Uninterruptable Power Supplies).\nHave a supply of potable water and food you don’t have to cook or non-electric cooking supplies so you can cook several days worth of meals. Don’t use BBQ’s or camp stoves indoors. (See Cooking Without Electricity).\n\nWhat to do WHEN the Power Goes Out: \n\nReport the outage to the power company. If localized\, they may not be aware of the outage.\nIf there are downed power lines in the area\, call 911 immediately. Keep people at least 100 feet away. Do not attempt to rescue someone trapped by a downed line. Assume all downed power lines are energized.\nDo not shower during an electrical storm. Lightning can travel through pipes.\nDo not make phone calls using land-lines during an electrical storm. Lightning can travel through the phone lines.\nTurn off or unplug major appliances and most light switches. When the power is restored\, and all electrical devices turn on at the same moment\, may cause an area wide circuit overload and lead to a second power outage.\nBe aware that food in your refrigerator and freezer will spoil quickly without power. If you don’t have a generator to provide backup power. Be prepared to consume or cook what you can quickly before the internal food temperature reaches 40ºF.\nSeek shelter in areas where the power is on if temperatures are extreme or you have particular medical needs.\nKeep the refrigerator closed to extend the life of your food.\nFor extensive or long-term power outages\, listen to a battery or crank powered radio for important updates.\n\nWhat to Do AFTER the Power is Restored: \n\nWait a couple minutes before turning on all lights and appliances following the restoration of power to avoid circuit overload.\nDispose of questionable food from your refrigerator or freezer that has reached internal temperatures of 40ºF or higher.\n\n  \nEl mes pasado\, nuestro valle experimentó un par de grandes tormentas. (Ver Cocinar sin electricidad).\n\nWhat to do WHEN the Power Goes Out: \n\nInforme el corte a la compañía eléctrica.

SUMMARY:2025 October: Vegetable Planting & Provident Living
DESCRIPTION:Hello Gilbert Stake\, welcome to October 2025! \nSummer is finally over and the days are beginning to cool down. October means it’s time to plant our winter gardens. Some of the summer plants may still have some life in them\, so by all means let them go if you want them. This is the time for veggies in the lettuce and cabbage families. Peas are still good to go. If planting seeds\, remember it takes about 3 weeks before they are ready to transplant. \nHere is a link for the planting guide for Maricopa County: \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nThe Principle of Preparation \nAs members of the Church\, we know that it is our responsibility to provide for ourselves and our families both in good times and in bad. Part of fulfilling that obligation is making preparations now to face whatever challenges may come our way. President Spencer W. Kimball taught that we must be “anxiously engaged in a positive program of preparation.” It is not enough to hope for the best; we must prepare for it. He explained\, “The Lord will not translate one’s good hopes and desires and intentions into works. Each of us must do that for himself.” \nEmergency Preparedness (churchofjesuschrist.org) \nMay the Lord bless you in your endeavors to live providently. Need help with any or all of these topics\, no problem. Just reach out to your ward’s Preparedness Specialist. If you ward does not have a specialist\, contact your ward Elders Quorum President and/or your Relief society President. \n  \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n\n	Related

SUMMARY:2025 September Preparedness - Preparación para septiembre
DESCRIPTION:Hello Gilbert Stake! – (¡Hola estaca Gilbert! abajo) \nSpiritual Preparedness blended with Temporal Preparedness: Ezekiel 38:7 – Be thou prepared\, and prepare for thyself\, thou\, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee\, and be thou guard unto them. The adversary never stops attacking.  So\, we can never stop preparing!  The more self-reliant we are – temporally\, emotionally\, and spiritually – the more prepared we are to thwart Satan’s relentless assaults.”  President Russell M. Nelson\, “Embrace the Future with Faith”\, Oct 2020 General Conference.  Temporal preparedness is more than food storage. One important topic that doesn’t get as much attention\, but it is vitally important is a Document Kit. What in the world is a document kit? A document kit\, or a disaster supply kit has all your important papers and information. \nDisaster supply kits need to be unique for each individual according to your own needs\, abilities\, and wants. “Be ready” with copies of important documents and cash in small bills in your emergency kits for you and your family to last at least 5 days. BRU Important Documents.pdf – Google Drive (BeReadyUtah.gov) checklist \nAI overview: “In an emergency\, keep copies of vital documents organized and accessible\, including identification (birth certificates\, passports\, driver’s licenses)\, financial records (bank accounts\, tax returns\, insurance policies)\, medical information (insurance cards\, prescriptions\, medical history\, and directives)\, and legal and property documents (wills\, deeds\, powers of attorney). Don’t forget contact lists for family\, doctors\, and utilities\, as well as pet information and a household inventory.” Safeguard Critical Documents and Valuables  (FEMA) checklist. \nThe important thing is\, keep working on being prepared. Don’t let the volumes of it all stop you. If you eat the preparedness elephant one bite at a time\, you’ll get there. Presidente Russell M. Nelson\, “Embrace the Future with Faith”\, Conferencia General de octubre de 2020. \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n\n	Related

SUMMARY:2025 July Preparedness
DESCRIPTION:Hello Gilbert Stake! \nSpiritual Preparedness blended with Temporal Preparedness: \nElder Ballard\, in a 2014 conference talk spoke of “Family Councils”. Here are a couple of highlights from that talk: \n“Until now\, however\, I have never talked in general conference about the most basic and fundamental—and perhaps the most important—of all councils: the family council. Family councils have always been needed. They are\, in fact\, eternal. We belonged to a family council in the premortal existence\, when we lived with our heavenly parents as their spirit children.” \n“The Church pamphlet entitled Our Family states\, “This council can meet to discuss family problems\, work out finances\, make plans\, support and strengthen [each other]\, and pray for one another and for the family unit.” \nFamily Councils: With Elder Ballard’s council in mind\, a great topic for a family council is a Family Emergency Communication Plan. Here are some thoughts from www.ready.gov for each member of the family to consider: \n“What if something happens and I’m not with my family?” \n“Will I be able to reach them?” \n“How will I know they are safe?” \n“How can I let them know I’m OK?” \n“During a disaster\, you will need to send and receive information from your family. Communication networks\, such as mobile phones and computers\, could be unreliable during disasters\, and electricity could be disrupted. Planning in advance will help ensure that all the members of your household—including children and people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs\, as well as outside caregivers—know how to reach each other and where to meet up in an emergency.” \nThere’s more at: Create Your Family Emergency Communication Plan \nAnd lots of information on the church website: Disaster Planning \nfamily_communication_plan_cards_blank \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n\n	Related

That can add up—but don’t let it feel overwhelming. Remember\, “by small and simple means are great things brought to pass” (Alma 37:6). \nThere are many types of containers you can use—just do what works best for you. As we take small steps with faith\, the Lord magnifies our efforts. \nLearn more about how to get started here: \ngilbertprepared.org/water-storage\niwillprepare.com Water Storage \n  \n¡Hola estaca Gilbert! SUMMARY:2025 March Preparedness - Time to Plant
DESCRIPTION:The Gilbert Stake will not be having a preparedness fair in 2025. We are excited to announce our stake is partnering with the surrounding stakes in Gilbert for a much larger fair in the first quarter of 2026. This is in the very beginning of the planning stages\, so stay tuned for more information throughout the year. \nTime to plant \nHow’s your garden coming? March is a good time to plant seeds or plants. For information on what and when to plant\, visit this University of Arizona website: \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nAnother thing you might want to consider as you plant is what plants compliment other plants. These are referred to as “companion plants.” Attached is a list of some vegetables and what other herbs\, vegetables and flowers grow well with them and why. This is not a complete list\, so check it out online for more information. Click here for Your Guide To Companion Vegetables & Combinations \nAs you work on preparedness and food storage\, remember these words from Elder David A. Bednar: “Additional aspects of a spiritual foundation for temporal preparedness include acting ‘in wisdom and order’ [Mosiah 4:27]\, which implies a gradual buildup of food storage and savings over time\, as well as embracing ‘small and simple’ means [Alma 37:6]\, which is a demonstration of faith that the Lord will magnify our small but consistent efforts.” \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n\n	Related

SUMMARY:2024 November Preparedness - Storage & Fruit Trees
DESCRIPTION:Hello Gilbert Stake! \nNovember 2024 is here. Along with our winter gardens\, trees are another consideration. Citrus trees and several varieties of fruit trees will grow in our area. And\, in case your were wondering\, we live in planting zone 9b. If you don’t know what a planting zone is\, this explanation is from Moon Valley Nursery’s website: \n“The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is a useful tool that provides information about the climatic conditions in different regions of the United States. The map is based on average annual minimum temperatures and divides the country into 13 different zones\, each with a unique set of temperature ranges. \nThe USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is essential for those who want to select the appropriate plants for their location. Each zone is assigned a number\, from 1 to 13\, with Zone 1 being the coldest and Zone 13 being the warmest. Plants are labeled with their corresponding hardiness zone\, indicating the minimum temperature they can tolerate.” \nKnowing the planting zone is important if you want to be successful in growing fruit trees. Attached is a guide for the varieties rated for our area. There are several varieties not listed in the list\, but if your local nursery is selling them\, they should be fine. We have a couple of tangerine trees\, orange trees\, and a grapefruit that have done very well for many years. \nHere is a link again\, for the planting guide for Maricopa County: \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nHere’s a thought from Elder D. Todd Christofferson from our last General Conference: \nIn the end\, burying our weapons of rebellion against God simply means yielding to the enticing of the Holy Spirit\, putting off the natural man\, and becoming “a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord.” It means putting the first commandment first in our lives. It means letting God prevail. If our love of God and our determination to serve Him with all our might\, mind\, and strength become the touchstone by which we judge all things and make all our decisions\, we will have buried our weapons of rebellion. By the grace of Christ\, God will forgive our sins and rebellions of the past and will take away the stain of those sins and rebellions from our hearts. In time\, He will even take away any desire for evil\, as He did with those Lamanite converts of the past. Thereafter\, we too “never [will] fall away.” \nBurying our weapons of rebellion leads to a unique joy. With all who have ever become converted to the Lord\, we are “brought to sing [the song of] redeeming love.” Our Heavenly Father and His Son\, our Redeemer\, have confirmed Their unending commitment to our ultimate happiness through the most profound love and sacrifice. We experience Their love daily. Surely we can reciprocate with our own love and loyalty. May we bury—very\, very deep—any element of rebellion against God in our lives and replace it with a willing heart and a willing mind. In the name of Jesus Christ\, amen. \nBurying Our Weapons of Rebellion \nTo help in your quest to follow the Prophets council\, here are suggestions to help build your storage in November: \nWeek 1: Vitamins & Minerals: Get extra C\, B complex\, calcium\, vitamin D and E< & iron. Multi-vitamins are great\, too.. \nWeek 2: Treat for baking! Cocoa\, nuts\, coconut\, butter\, chocolate chips\, etc. Watch for sales on sugar (tis the season\, holiday baking brings good sales). \nWeek 3: Rolled oats\, corn meal\, cream of wheat\, instant oatmeal. Stock up on boxed cereal too! \nWeek 4: Emergency auto Kits! Update it or make one\, remember food\, water\, night & warmth along with car repair items. \nAND… since we missed last month\, here is the list for October: \nWeek 1: 72 Hour Kit Week. Start it\, update it\, or complete it…just do something. Be sure to check clothing sizes. \nWeek 2: Wraps & bags…aluminum foil\, garbage bags with twist ties\, freezer bags\, saran wrap\, wax paper\, etc. \nWeek 3: Do something with those apples! Pie filling\, applesauce\, juice\, apple butter\, jam and jelly\, or dehydrate. \nWeek 4: Stock up on vinegar\, powdered eggs & powdered cheese. \nMay the Lord bless you in your endeavors to increase your personal spirituality and live providently. \nNeed help with any or all of these topics\, no problem. Just reach out to your ward’s Preparedness Specialist. If you ward does not have a specialist\, contact your ward Elders Quorum President and/or your Relief society President. \n  \nCitrus Fruit \nZone 9 is a marginal climate for citrus\, as an unexpected cold snap will put an end to many\, including grapefruit and most limes. However\, there are a number of cold hardy citrus trees from which to choose\, including the following: \n\nOwardi satsuma mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata ‘Owari’)\nCalamondin (Citrus mitis)\nMeyer lemon (Citrus x meyeri)\nMarumi kumquat (Citrus japonica ‘Marumi’)\nTrifoliate orange (Citrus trifoliata)\nGiant pummelo (Citrus pummel)\nSweet Clementine (Citrus reticulata ‘Clementine’)\n\nTropical Fruits \nZone 9 is a bit too chilly for mango and papaya\, but several tropical fruits are hardy enough to tolerate the area’s cool temperatures. Consider the following choices: \n\nAvocado (Persea americana)\nStarfruit (Averrhoa carambola)\nPassionfruit (Passiflora edulis)\nAsian guava (Psidium guajava)\nKiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa)\n\nOther Fruits \nZone 9 fruit tree varieties also include several hardy varieties of apples\, apricots\, peaches\, and other orchard favorites. The following have been bred to thrive without long chilling periods: Apples \n\nPink Lady (Malus domestica ‘Cripps Pink’)\nAkane (Malus domestica ‘Akane’)\n\nApricots \n\nFlora Gold (Prunus armeniaca ‘Flora Gold’)\nTilton (Prunus armeniaca ‘Tilton’)\nGolden Amber (Prunus armeniaca ‘Golden Amber’)\n\nCherries \n\nCraig’s Crimson (Prunus aviam ‘Craig’s Crimson’)\nEnglish Morello sour cherry (Prunus cerasus ‘English Morello’)\nLambert cherry (Prunus aviam ‘Lambert’)\nUtah Giant (Prunus aviam ‘Utah Giant’)\n\nFigs \n\nChicago Hardy (Ficus carica ‘Chicago Hardy’)\nCeleste (Ficus carica ‘Celeste’)\nEnglish Brown Turkey (Ficus carica ‘Brown Turkey’)\n\nPeaches \n\nO’Henry (Prunus persica ‘O’Henry’)\nSuncrest (Prunus persica ‘Suncrest’)\n\nNectarines \n\nDesert Delight (Prunus persica ‘Desert Delight’)\nSun Grand (Prunus persica ‘Sun Grand’)\nSilver Lode (Prunus persica ‘Silver Lode’)\n\nPears \n\nWarren (Pyrus communis ‘Warren’)\nHarrow Delight (Pyrus communis ‘Harrow Delight’)\n\nPlums \n\nBurgundy Japanese (Prunus salicina ‘Burgundy’)\nSanta Rosa (Prunus salicina ‘Santa Rosa’)\n\nHardy Kiwi Unlike regular kiwi\, hardy kiwi is a remarkably tough plant that produces clusters of small\, tangy fruits not much larger than grapes. Suitable varieties include: \n\nHardy red kiwi (Actinidia purpurea ‘Hardy Red’)\nIssai (Actinidia ‘Issai’)\n\nOlives – Olive trees generally require warmer climates\, but several are well-suited for zone 9 gardens. \n\nMission (Olea europaea ‘Mission’)\nBarouni (Olea europaea ‘Barouni’)\nPicual (Olea europaea ‘Picual’)\nMaurino (Olea europaea ‘Maurino’)\n\nInformation retrieved online from: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/garden-how-to/gardening-by-zone/zone-9-10-11/growing-fruit-trees-in-zone-9.htm  \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n\n	Related
