It was founded on God given principles and special men and women were inspired from on high in order to create this nation. It was the creation of this nation that allowed for the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. \nIn our articles\, we have discussed many topics concerning food storage and preparedness. But one thing we haven’t addressed is what to store all this food storage in. Storage containers are not all the same\, and some are not safe for long term storage\, and some should never be used. Below is information on what can be used and what to always avoid and never use. It’s also important to remember even safe containers have some limitations and best uses. \nSafe Containers \nGlass Bottles: Foods stored in glass should be stored in a dark area. If this is not possible\, store bottles in a cardboard box or wrap in aluminum foil. Light will increase the rate at which food quality is lost. Glass containers are rodent and insect proof and when properly sealed will not allow air or fumes to degrade the products stored. \nMetal cans: Cans are a great storage option\, especially in areas that are prone to flooding. After a flood\, it is easy to disinfect the can while still protecting the food inside. Cans will rust in humid areas and should be stored with care and rotated often under these circumstances. Metal cans are airtight\, as well as rodent and insect proof. \nPlastic buckets or bottles: Only food grade plastic containers should be used for storage. Other plastics have been manufactured using chemicals which can be toxic. If you are unsure\, check with the supplier or manufacturer before storing food. Determined rodents have been known to enjoy a feast which was stored in plastic containers. \nKnow the codes for safe-to-use storage options: \n\nThe Cup and Fork Symbol: This universal logo guarantees the material is safe for food and beverages.\nPlastic Resin Codes: Check the bottom of the container for a triangle recycling symbol. Food-safe plastics are typically marked with numbers 1\, 2\, 4\, or 5.\n1 (PETE): Best for single-use bottles; do not reuse.\n2 (HDPE): Ideal and highly stable for long-term food storage (e.g.\, bulk bins\, milk jugs)\n4 (LDPE): Safe and commonly used for food bags and squeeze bottles.\n5 (PP): Safe\, heat-resistant\, and ideal for reusable containers.\nLook for printed phrases like “Food Grade\,” “FDA Compliant\,” or “USDA Approved.”\n\nKnow what to avoid: \n\nRecycling Codes 3 and 6: Never use containers marked with 3 (PVC) or 6 (Polystyrene) for food storage\, as they can leach toxic chemicals.\nCode 7 (Other) with a BPA Warning: While some polycarbonates are code 7\, they should be avoided unless explicitly labeled “BPA-Free.”\nUnknown or Unmarked Buckets: If you are repurposing a plastic bucket\, avoid it unless it has the cup and fork symbol or “food-grade” printed on it. Buckets used for paints\, chemicals\, or detergents are never safe for food\, even after washing.\n\nMylar bags: Mylar will protect food from contamination from air and other fumes and are light weight for carrying in an emergency. They will protect against light damage. They are very susceptible to rodent damage\, can be easily punctured and if not vacuum sealed “sweating” can occur within the pouch. \nOriginal store packaging: When possible\, food should be stored in the original container. Use packing tape to seal the ends of boxes of pastas\, cereals\, and other easily infested items. If an infestation occurs\, the pests cannot get into the protected boxes and if a box came from the manufacturer infested\, then critters cannot get out and infest other items. \nUnsafe Containers \nPlastic bags: Plastic bags meant for trash or garden use have been chemically treated. These chemicals can be toxic. \nPaper: Paper will absorb moisture in the air which can then be transferred to your food\, spoiling it. Pests and rodents love paper\, an easy meal! \nCardboard: A cardboard box is a good place to store items in their original containers but not as your primary container. Cardboard\, like paper\, will absorb moisture in the air and is an easy target for pests. \nWhen repackaging or breaking down bulk items for storage it is important to use a moisture absorbing packet and oxygen absorbing packet. Verify the size of the container does not exceed the amount the packets can absorb.
