SUMMARY:2023 Gilbert Stake Emergency Response Survey
DESCRIPTION:Elder L. Tom Perry taught\, “The need for preparation is abundantly clear. The great blessing of being prepared gives us freedom from fear” (“If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear\,” Ensign\, Nov. 1995). Emergency Situations in our region include monsoons and other strong storms\, flooding\, extreme heat\, power outages\, train derailment\, Palo Verde Nuclear Power plant problems\, and public health incidents. In an effort to gather critical information needed to respond to possible local emergencies\, we would ask that each household use the link below to fill out this short survey.  This information will only be used in an emergency to identify key resources and skills that may be needed to help our wards\, stake & community. \nEmergency Response Survey \n \n(above QR code to this website event) \n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:2024 January: Preparedness Inventory - Inventario de Preparación
DESCRIPTION:Happy New Year Gilbert Stake! \nAs we start a new year\, let’s do some self-inventory as a stake. Take some time this month to look at your preparedness in perhaps a different way. This is a great family activity with all kinds of possibilities. We invite each member of our stake to do an inventory of temporal and spiritual needs. \nFor spiritual preparedness\, you may ask yourself these (or any other) questions: \n\nHow am I strengthening my spiritual foundation daily? Is it sufficient?\nHow are we strengthening our spiritual foundation as a family daily? Is it sufficient?\n\nFor temporal preparedness you may discuss and review your food storage as a family. This month take an inventory of what you have\, and what each family member uses throughout each day\, and how often or how much is used. Do this for at least a week\, but 2  weeks would be best for a better idea of what is being used. Feel free to go longer for an even better idea. \nAlthough it should be included\, this is more than just food. Think in terms of personal hygiene\, cleaning supplies\, gas in the car(s)\, sandwich bags\, diapers\, baby formula\, medication\, finances\, etc. (Don’t forget your pets!) Anything that is used by anyone during the inventory period. Having 800 pounds of wheat in the garage and under beds is fantastic\, but if that’s not what you use on a daily basis\, it falls very short of what you actually need. \nThe completed inventory will give guidance for becoming spiritually and temporally prepared. Here are the family inventory forms you can download and use: Food and Kitchen Supply Checklist.xlsx or Food and Kitchen Supply Checklist.pdf. \nIf you have questions or need help\, please reach out to your ward Preparedness Specialist. If your ward does not have a specialist\, contact your ward Elders Quorum President and/or your Relief Society President. \nOne last thing; mark your calendars for the next Gilbert Community Preparedness Fair on Saturday\, March 23\, 2024 from 9 am to 12 pm. Our Stake is\, once again\, teaming up with the Val Vista Stake for this amazing event. More information to follow. \nClick here to get to the Stake’s Prepare page. Click here for resources: gilbertprepared.org. SUMMARY:2024 February Preparedness: Spiritual Strength\, Food Storage & Gardening - Fortaleza Espiritual\, Almacenamiento de Alimentos y Jardinería
DESCRIPTION:Hello Gilbert Stake! \nHopefully\, during the month of January everyone made the time to review individual and family spiritual preparedness. So\, you may be asking yourselves\, “what’s the next step?” The next step is to make a needed change. If there is more than one area you feel could be strengthened\, choose one and work on it. Take baby steps if needed. The most important thing is to do something. \nThe other topic was to review your food storage by what you actually use. Keep the list you developed handy and use it to plan. Now\, instead of just buying what you need for the week\, or 2 weeks\, buy a couple of extra items to put on the shelf for future use. By doing this\, you won’t be going crazy and breaking the bank. Pretty soon you will have built a nice pantry of supplies. \nHere is a suggestion to help build your storage in February: \n\nWeek 1: Juices: lemon\, orange\, grapefruit or powdered juices\nWeek 2: Peanut butter… get creamy and/or crunchy. (substitutions are ok if there are health issues) Don’t forget dehydrated butter\nWeek 3: Solid vegetable shortening and/or oils (vegetable\, corn\, canola\, olive\, peanut\, sesame)\nWeek 4: Personal products: Soap\, deodorant\, shampoo\, lotion\, shaving supplies\, feminine products\, toothbrushes\, etc.\n\nFebruary is also a great month to start planning for your spring and summer garden. If you have never had a garden\, start with something small and only put in vegetables that you actually like. If you like zucchini and have never grown it before\, one plant is probably more than sufficient. It is a heavy producer and one plant will normally meet all your personal needs and those of your neighbors. \nGardening can be fun and it helps you get connected to Mother Earth. Don’t go so big that becomes a major burden and an object of contempt. \nFor information on when to plant visit this University of Arizona website: \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nNeed help with any or all of these topics\, no problem. Just reach out to your ward’s Preparedness Specialist. If you ward does not have a specialist\, contact your ward Elders Quorum President and/or your Relief society President. \nThe Gilbert and Val Vista Stakes have teamed up again for another Gilbert Community Preparedness Fair. This will be on Saturday\, March 23\, 2024 from 9 am to 12 pm. Plan on bringing the family. More information to follow. \n  \n¡Hola estaca Gilbert! For information on what and when to plant\, visit this University of Arizona website: \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nAs you work on preparedness and food storage\, remember these words from Elder David A. Bednar: “Additional aspects of a spiritual foundation for temporal preparedness include acting ‘in wisdom and order’ [Mosiah 4:27]\, which implies a gradual buildup of food storage and savings over time\, as well as embracing ‘small and simple’ means [Alma 37:6]\, which is a demonstration of faith that the Lord will magnify our small but consistent efforts.” \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:2024 April: Preparedness Follow-up & Gardening - Seguimiento de Preparación y Jardinería
DESCRIPTION:Hello Gilbert Stake! \nLast month we had an amazing Preparedness Fair. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. There were a lot of topics to investigate and learn from. We invite you to continue investigating the topics\, which can be found here: https://gilbertprepared.org  and apply them so they can help you in your efforts to follow the council of prophets to be self-sufficient and prepared. Here is some council from President Nelson: \n“My dear brothers and sisters\, these are the latter days. If you and I are to withstand the forthcoming perils and pressures\, it is imperative that we each have a firm spiritual foundation built upon the rock of our Redeemer\, Jesus Christ. So I ask each of you\, how firm is your foundation? And what reinforcements to your testimony and understanding of the gospel are needed? … We Have been promised that “if we are prepared we shall not fear.” This assurance has profound implications today. The Lord has declared that despite today’s unprecedented challenges\, those who build their foundations upon Jesus Christ\, and have learned how to draw upon His power\, need not succumb to the unique anxieties of this era.” –  The Temple and Your Spiritual Foundation” (Liahona\, Nov. 2021\, 93-96) \nTo help in your quest to follow the Prophets council\, here are suggestions to help build your storage in April: \n\nWeek 1: 72 Hour Kit Week. Start it\, update it\, or complete it…just do something. Be sure to check clothing sizes.\nWeek 2: Powdered milk (instant non-fat): 40 ounces will make 5 gallons. Get what your family will need and drink.\nWeek 3: Assemble an emergency sewing kit: thread\, pins\, needles\, buttons\, snaps\, zippers\, tape measure\, etc.\nWeek 4: Pasta: don’t forget the macaroni and cheese! Spaghetti\, macaroni\, egg noodles.\n\nHopefully\, during the month of March you were able to plan your garden and plant. If not\, don’t despair! It may be too late to plant seeds\, but you still have time to get some plants from a nursery and plant them. \nDid you know some vegetables and herbs like to be by each other? This is called companion planting. Here is a link to a website that talks about this subject. There are a lot of adds\, but the information is good. Or you can search it out on your own. \nCompanion Planting Chart and Guide for Vegetable Gardens (thespruce.com) \nGardening can be fun as a family\, and it helps you get connected to Mother Earth. We are always amazed at how much food one plant can provide. Remember\, don’t go so big with your garden that is becomes a major burden and an object of contempt. \nNeed help with any or all of these topics\, no problem. Just reach out to your ward’s Preparedness Specialist. If you ward does not have a specialist\, contact your ward Elders Quorum President and/or your Relief society President. \n  \n¡Hola estaca Gilbert! Si no\, ¡no te desesperes! \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:2024 May: Preparedness Build up Storage - Preparación Acumulación Almacenamiento
DESCRIPTION:Hello Gilbert Stake! \nWow! It’s May already! As this year is zooming by\, take a few minutes and do an inventory of what steps you have taken toward preparedness. Remember that as you prepare temporally\, that spiritual preparedness can occur at the same time. “Wherefore\, verily I say unto you that all things unto me are spiritual\, and not at any time have I given unto you a law which was temporal; neither any man\, nor the children of men; neither Adam\, your father\, whom I created. \n“Behold\, I gave unto him that he should be an agent unto himself; and I gave unto him commandment\, but no temporal commandment gave I unto him\, for my commandments are spiritual.” (D&C 29:34–35.) \nThe following link is a talk given by President Marion G. Romney about “The Celestial Nature of Self-reliance.”  \nhttps://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/1982/10/the-celestial-nature-of-self-reliance?lang=eng#title1 \nHere are suggestion to help build your storage in May: \n– Week 1: Grains: wheat\, rye\, bran\, corn\, barley\, cracked wheat\, millet. Flour: wheat & white.   \n                 Get a hand grinder. \n– Week 2: Dry soups and soup mixes or make your own mix from dehydrated vegies. Boxes of  \n                 crackers; saltines\, graham\, etc. \n– Week 3: Jell-O gelatin. Pudding mixes \n– Week 4: Garden seeds: corn\, carrots\, green beans\, broccoli\, cauliflower\, peas\, onions\, tomatoes\,  \n                 squash\, zucchini\, melons \nIn October 2020 General Conference\, President Nelson taught us how to prepare by increasing our faith; “The Lord taught us how to increase our faith by seeking “learning\, even by study and also by faith. We strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ as we strive to keep His commandments and “always remember him.”  Further\, our faith increases every time we exercise our faith in Him. That is what learning by faith means. \n“I promise that as we create places of security\, prepare our minds to be faithful to God\, and never stop preparing\, God will bless us. He will “deliver us; yea\, insomuch that he [will] speak peace to our souls\, and [will] grant unto us great faith\, and … cause us that we [can] hope for our deliverance in him.” (President Russell M. Nelson\, “Embrace the Future with Faith\,” General Conference 2020) \nIf you need help with preparedness\, reach out to your ward’s Preparedness Specialist. If your ward does not have a specialist\, contact your ward Elders Quorum President and/or your Relief Society President. \n  \n¡Hola estaca Gilbert! \n¡Guau!

SUMMARY:2024 June: Preparedness Follow-up and Home Canning
DESCRIPTION:Hello Gilbert Stake! \nWelcome to June! We hope and pray your journey in living providently is progressing each month. \nFor those that put gardens in\, the harvest may have already begun for some of the fruits and vegetables. If it looks like you will have more than you can readily use\, what will you do with the extra? Now is the time to make those preparations. Of course\, you can share your bounty with family\, friends and neighbors. It has been our experience that some of our friends and neighbors can only use so much and then they are maxed out. So\, if you have not already planned for it\, consider home canning. This is great so you can utilize the fruits and vegetables\, harvested in their season\, in the coming months and even years. \nFor those interested\, but don’t know how\, here is a great article on how to home can. It really is easier than you think. \nhttps://www.allrecipes.com/article/how-to-can-food/ \nIf you’re still a bit nervous about it\, we’re sure you can find someone in your ward that will help you. Those that are already set up to home can\, it is a good idea to check your equipment and supplies ahead of time. If you will be pressure canning\, make sure to check the seal in your lid to make sure it is in good shape. \nWe had access to a family members peach tree that was loaded with early peaches. So\, we washed\, pitted them and juiced them. Now we have yummy peach juice on our shelf along with the apple and grape juice. What to do with the left over pulp after juicing? Well after a brief whip in the blender we now have peach sauce next to our apple sauce. The juice and the sauce were processed in a water bath canner. \nProvident living is two sided\, temporal and spiritual. We need to strive to stay balanced between both aspects. Elder Robert D. Hales Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles stated: \n“…our children are growing up in times of economic uncertainty. Just as our grandparents and great-grandparents learned vital lessons through economic adversity\, what we learn now\, in our present circumstances\, can bless us and our posterity for generations to come. \n…Our success is never measured by how strongly we are tempted but by how faithfully we respond. We must ask for help from our Heavenly Father and seek strength through the Atonement of His Son\, Jesus Christ. In both temporal and spiritual things\, obtaining this divine assistance enables us to become provident providers for ourselves and others. \nWhat is a provident provider? \n All of us are responsible to provide for ourselves and our families in both temporal and spiritual ways. To provide providently\, we must practice the principles of provident living: joyfully living within our means\, being content with what we have\, avoiding excessive debt\, and diligently saving and preparing for rainy-day emergencies. When we live providently\, we can provide for ourselves and our families and also follow the Savior’s example to serve and bless others.” \n“Becoming Provident Providers Temporally and Spiritually” (Ensign\, May. 2009) \n  \nTo help in your quest to follow the Prophets council\, here are suggestions to help build your storage in June: \n\nWeek 1: Safety week: Matches\, flashlight\, and dated batteries\, Don’t forget child-proof home devices also.\nWeek 2: Freeze-a-cheese: Grate and bag a whole 5 pounds. Use in casseroles and soups. Also by parmesan.\nWeek 3: Condiments: Mustard\, ketchup\, relish\, mayo\, Worcestershire pickles\, olives\, soy sauce\, salad dressings.\nWeek 4: White sales: Buy a thermal blanket\, some new pillows\, or new sheets. Buy a new sleeping bag or a tent.\n\nDon’t forget to weed and mulch your garden. Mulch will help the garden retain moisture longer and will be really helpful while it’s hot outside. Also\, consider putting up some netting to provide shade so the sun doesn’t burn the plants. \nNeed help with any or all of these topics\, no problem. Just reach out to your ward’s Preparedness Specialist. If you ward does not have a specialist\, contact your ward Elders Quorum President and/or your Relief society President. \n  \n¡Hola estaca Gilbert!\n \n¡Bienvenidos a junio!

SUMMARY:July-Preparedness Follow-up and Home Canning Ideas
DESCRIPTION:Hello Gilbert Stake! \nWelcome to July! 2024 is already half way gone. Let’s keep up the momentum! \n  \nFor the gardeners\, the harvest of many vegetables has begun. Tomatoes\, squash\, peppers\, onions are coming in and being used. I love the taste of the first tomato every year. The flavor is amazing compared to what is purchased in the stores. Now\, with the temperatures so high\, your garden may need some extra care and attention. Make sure to water and keep the ground moist (not saturated). Provide shade. We always put up some sun shade netting. It costs a little\, but we re-use it each year. Your plants will love the protection from the intense sun. \nFor some\, me included\, how do you know when a fruit or vegetable is ripe and ready to pick? I know I don’t like harvesting too soon\, but I also don’t like to wait until the fruit is past its prime. Here is a link to help with those harvesting questions. I found it very useful. \nGuidelines for Harvesting Vegetables | Piedmont Master Gardeners \n  \nIf you’re into canning your bountiful harvest\, whether from your personal garden or the farmers market\, now is a great time to start. \nMy wife and I made a trip to the farmers market and came home with apples\, green grapes and cherries. We like to mix them all together when we juice them so we get an amazing flavorful blend. And just like last month with the peaches\, when the juice was done we whipped up the pulp in the blender and have a fantastic blend of apple\, grape and cherry sauce. We don’t add anything to the blend\, just the fruit and it is yummy. It is important to note\, we cored the apples\, pitted the cherries removed the grapes from the vines prior to juicing. That way the only thing left is pure pulp. The juice was processed in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes and the sauce processed for 20 minutes. \n  \nHere is a link to a steamer juicer very similar to the one we use. We purchased a couple of these last year and gave them to family members for Christmas. They are really easy to use and work great. \nAmazon.com: Cook N Home Basics Canning Juice Steamer Extractor With water/cooking pan\, juice pan\, strainer/loading pan\, lid\, and hose with clamp \, 11-Quart\, Mirror Satin\, Stainless Steel: Mehu Liisa Steam Juicer: Home & Kitchen \n  \nHere is some great thoughts from Elder Bednar to help us in our spiritual preparedness. \n“Some Church members opine that emergency plans and supplies\, food storage\, and 72-hour kits must not be important anymore because the Brethren have not spoken recently and extensively about these and related topics in general conference. But repeated admonitions to prepare have been proclaimed by leaders of the Church for decades. The consistency of prophetic counsel over time creates a powerful concert of clarity and a warning volume far louder than solo performances can ever produce. \nJust as challenging times reveal inadequacies in temporal preparedness\, so too the maladies of spiritual casualness and complacency inflict their most detrimental effects during difficult trials. \n… \n  \n“Thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line\, precept upon precept\, here a little and there a little; and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts\, and lend an ear unto my counsel\, for they shall learn wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I will give more.”11 \nI invite each of us to “consider [our] ways”12 and “examine [ourselves]\, whether [we] be in the faith; [and] prove [our] own selves.”13 What have we learned during these recent months of lifestyle adjustments and restrictions? What do we need to improve in our lives spiritually\, physically\, socially\, emotionally\, and intellectually? Now is the time to prepare and prove ourselves willing and able to do all things whatsoever the Lord our God shall command us.” \n  \nWe Will Prove Them Herewith\nBy Elder David A. Bednar \nOf the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles \n  \nTo help in your quest to follow the Prophets council\, here are suggestions to help build your storage in June: \nWeek 1: Jams or jellies. Make a batch of freezer jam or try making some cooked variety. \nWeek 2: Water jugs or buy some bottled water. Don’t forget bleach or other water purification. \nWeek 3: Ready dinners: ravioli\, pasta\, oriental\, boxes or frozen. Get what your family will eat. \nWeek 4: Canned goods! Chili\, soups\, canned meats\, beans\, etc. Buy what your family likes. \n  \nMay the Lord bless you in your endeavors to live providently. \n  \nNeed help with any or all of these topics\, no problem. SUMMARY:2024 September-Preparedness and Winter Garden Ideas
DESCRIPTION:Hello Gilbert Stake! \nWelcome to September! 2024 is going fast and it’s time to consider what to do with your garden. At this point there are a couple of options; you can winterize it and wait for spring\, or you can prepare for the wonderful cooler weather veggies. \nIf you choose to not have a garden in the winter\, here are some things you can do to have the garden bed ready for next year. \nHow to Winterize Your Vegetable Garden \n\nHarvest any remaining crops.\nCompost for best results.\nAdd nutrients.\nTake notes to get ready for next year.\n\nIf you choose to keep your garden going\, this is a great time to plant lettuces and cabbage family plants. Of course\, if you can protect your plants you can keep many of the summerish vegetables all winter. \nHere is a link for the planting guide for Maricopa County: \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \n  \nThe Principle of Preparation \nHere’s some thoughts on preparedness from our church leaders: \nMembers of the Church have been counseled for many years to be prepared for adversity. Preparation\, both spiritual and temporal\, can dispel fear. \nElder L. Tom Perry taught\, “The need for preparation is abundantly clear. The great blessing of being prepared gives us freedom from fear.” \nWith the guidance of Church leaders\, individuals and families should prepare to be self-reliant in times of personal and widespread tragedy. \nAs members of the Church\, we know that it is our responsibility to provide for ourselves and our families both in good times and in bad. Part of fulfilling that obligation is making preparations now to face whatever challenges may come our way. \nPresident Spencer W. Kimball taught that we must be “anxiously engaged in a positive program of preparation.” It is not enough to hope for the best; we must prepare for it. \nHe explained\, “The Lord will not translate one’s good hopes and desires and intentions into works. Each of us must do that for himself.” \nEmergency Preparedness (churchofjesuschrist.org) \nTo help in your quest to follow the Prophets council\, here are suggestions to help build your storage in September: \nWeek 1: Vegetable Week! Green beans\, corn\, carrots\, mushrooms. Can\, freeze\, dehydrate or buy! \nWeek 2: Get those peas\, legumes\, dried potatoes\, and dried onions. Try dehydrating your own. \nWeek 3: Medical supplies: aspirin\, Tylenol\, Pepto Bismol\, Vicks. Whatever your family needs. Get children’s medicines too. \nWeek 4: Iodized salt. It seasons\, it preserves\, it’s a toothpaste\, and a de-icer! You never have too much. \nAND… since we missed last month\, here is the list for August: \nWeek 1: Back to school sales! Paper\, pencils\, crayons\, envelopes\, stamps\, journals. \nWeek 2: Baking powder\, baking soda\, corn starch\, vanilla\, bouillon cubes\, cooking spray\, yeast. \nWeek 3: Tomato Week! Salsa\, juice\, sauce\, whole\, chopped\, paste\, pizza and spaghetti sauce. \nWeek 4: Do some fruit canning or drying. If not…then buy it! Watch for sales! \n  \nMay the Lord bless you in your endeavors to live providently. Need help with any or all of these topics\, no problem. Just reach out to your ward’s Preparedness Specialist. SUMMARY:2024 November Preparedness - Storage & Fruit Trees
DESCRIPTION:Hello Gilbert Stake! \nNovember 2024 is here. Along with our winter gardens\, trees are another consideration. Citrus trees and several varieties of fruit trees will grow in our area. And\, in case your were wondering\, we live in planting zone 9b. If you don’t know what a planting zone is\, this explanation is from Moon Valley Nursery’s website: \n“The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is a useful tool that provides information about the climatic conditions in different regions of the United States. The map is based on average annual minimum temperatures and divides the country into 13 different zones\, each with a unique set of temperature ranges. \nThe USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is essential for those who want to select the appropriate plants for their location. Each zone is assigned a number\, from 1 to 13\, with Zone 1 being the coldest and Zone 13 being the warmest. Plants are labeled with their corresponding hardiness zone\, indicating the minimum temperature they can tolerate.” \nKnowing the planting zone is important if you want to be successful in growing fruit trees. Attached is a guide for the varieties rated for our area. There are several varieties not listed in the list\, but if your local nursery is selling them\, they should be fine. We have a couple of tangerine trees\, orange trees\, and a grapefruit that have done very well for many years. \nHere is a link again\, for the planting guide for Maricopa County: \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nHere’s a thought from Elder D. Todd Christofferson from our last General Conference: \nIn the end\, burying our weapons of rebellion against God simply means yielding to the enticing of the Holy Spirit\, putting off the natural man\, and becoming “a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord.” It means putting the first commandment first in our lives. It means letting God prevail. If our love of God and our determination to serve Him with all our might\, mind\, and strength become the touchstone by which we judge all things and make all our decisions\, we will have buried our weapons of rebellion. By the grace of Christ\, God will forgive our sins and rebellions of the past and will take away the stain of those sins and rebellions from our hearts. In time\, He will even take away any desire for evil\, as He did with those Lamanite converts of the past. Thereafter\, we too “never [will] fall away.” \nBurying our weapons of rebellion leads to a unique joy. With all who have ever become converted to the Lord\, we are “brought to sing [the song of] redeeming love.” Our Heavenly Father and His Son\, our Redeemer\, have confirmed Their unending commitment to our ultimate happiness through the most profound love and sacrifice. We experience Their love daily. Surely we can reciprocate with our own love and loyalty. May we bury—very\, very deep—any element of rebellion against God in our lives and replace it with a willing heart and a willing mind. In the name of Jesus Christ\, amen. \nBurying Our Weapons of Rebellion \nTo help in your quest to follow the Prophets council\, here are suggestions to help build your storage in November: \nWeek 1: Vitamins & Minerals: Get extra C\, B complex\, calcium\, vitamin D and E< & iron. Multi-vitamins are great\, too.. \nWeek 2: Treat for baking! Just reach out to your ward’s Preparedness Specialist. If you ward does not have a specialist\, contact your ward Elders Quorum President and/or your Relief society President. \n  \nCitrus Fruit \nZone 9 is a marginal climate for citrus\, as an unexpected cold snap will put an end to many\, including grapefruit and most limes. However\, there are a number of cold hardy citrus trees from which to choose\, including the following: \n\nOwardi satsuma mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata ‘Owari’)\nCalamondin (Citrus mitis)\nMeyer lemon (Citrus x meyeri)\nMarumi kumquat (Citrus japonica ‘Marumi’)\nTrifoliate orange (Citrus trifoliata)\nGiant pummelo (Citrus pummel)\nSweet Clementine (Citrus reticulata ‘Clementine’)\n\nTropical Fruits \nZone 9 is a bit too chilly for mango and papaya\, but several tropical fruits are hardy enough to tolerate the area’s cool temperatures. Consider the following choices: \n\nAvocado (Persea americana)\nStarfruit (Averrhoa carambola)\nPassionfruit (Passiflora edulis)\nAsian guava (Psidium guajava)\nKiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa)\n\nOther Fruits \nZone 9 fruit tree varieties also include several hardy varieties of apples\, apricots\, peaches\, and other orchard favorites. The following have been bred to thrive without long chilling periods: Apples \n\nPink Lady (Malus domestica ‘Cripps Pink’)\nAkane (Malus domestica ‘Akane’)\n\nApricots \n\nFlora Gold (Prunus armeniaca ‘Flora Gold’)\nTilton (Prunus armeniaca ‘Tilton’)\nGolden Amber (Prunus armeniaca ‘Golden Amber’)\n\nCherries \n\nCraig’s Crimson (Prunus aviam ‘Craig’s Crimson’)\nEnglish Morello sour cherry (Prunus cerasus ‘English Morello’)\nLambert cherry (Prunus aviam ‘Lambert’)\nUtah Giant (Prunus aviam ‘Utah Giant’)\n\nFigs \n\nChicago Hardy (Ficus carica ‘Chicago Hardy’)\nCeleste (Ficus carica ‘Celeste’)\nEnglish Brown Turkey (Ficus carica ‘Brown Turkey’)\n\nPeaches \n\nO’Henry (Prunus persica ‘O’Henry’)\nSuncrest (Prunus persica ‘Suncrest’)\n\nNectarines \n\nDesert Delight (Prunus persica ‘Desert Delight’)\nSun Grand (Prunus persica ‘Sun Grand’)\nSilver Lode (Prunus persica ‘Silver Lode’)\n\nPears \n\nWarren (Pyrus communis ‘Warren’)\nHarrow Delight (Pyrus communis ‘Harrow Delight’)\n\nPlums \n\nBurgundy Japanese (Prunus salicina ‘Burgundy’)\nSanta Rosa (Prunus salicina ‘Santa Rosa’)\n\nHardy Kiwi Unlike regular kiwi\, hardy kiwi is a remarkably tough plant that produces clusters of small\, tangy fruits not much larger than grapes. Suitable varieties include: \n\nHardy red kiwi (Actinidia purpurea ‘Hardy Red’)\nIssai (Actinidia ‘Issai’)\n\nOlives – Olive trees generally require warmer climates\, but several are well-suited for zone 9 gardens. \n\nMission (Olea europaea ‘Mission’)\nBarouni (Olea europaea ‘Barouni’)\nPicual (Olea europaea ‘Picual’)\nMaurino (Olea europaea ‘Maurino’)\n\nInformation retrieved online from: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/garden-how-to/gardening-by-zone/zone-9-10-11/growing-fruit-trees-in-zone-9.htm  \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:2025 January - Gratitude & Preparedness
DESCRIPTION:Happy New Year! Welcome to 2025! \nAs we begin the New Year\, take time to express gratitude\, among all things\, the progress you have made in preparedness. Elder Kyrylo Pokhylko said\, “I truly believe the Lord loves grateful people and we will be even more blessed with what we need\, because we are grateful”. Doctrine and Covenants 78:19 teaches that “He who receiveth all things with thankfulness shall be made glorious; and the things of this earth shall be added unto him\, even a hundred fold\, yea\, more.” \nHere are suggestions to help increase preparedness in January: \n\nWeek 1: Inventory storage items; food\, medicine\, medical supplies\, 72-hour kit\, etc\nWeek 2: Laundry and dish soap\, bleach\, cleansers for bathrooms\, kitchen\, floors\, and windows\nWeek 3: Medical supplies and medicines\nWeek 4: Paper supplies; paper towels\, plates\, cups\, Kleenex\, toilet paper\, napkins\, utensils\n\nA few preparedness tips to remember: \n\nBuy the largest amount you can sensibly afford.\nLearn to use what you store\, and then use your storage.\nReplace items as they are used.\nRotate your inventory. SUMMARY:2025 March Preparedness - Time to Plant
DESCRIPTION:The Gilbert Stake will not be having a preparedness fair in 2025. We are excited to announce our stake is partnering with the surrounding stakes in Gilbert for a much larger fair in the first quarter of 2026. This is in the very beginning of the planning stages\, so stay tuned for more information throughout the year. \nTime to plant \nHow’s your garden coming? March is a good time to plant seeds or plants. For information on what and when to plant\, visit this University of Arizona website: \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nAnother thing you might want to consider as you plant is what plants compliment other plants. These are referred to as “companion plants.” Attached is a list of some vegetables and what other herbs\, vegetables and flowers grow well with them and why. This is not a complete list\, so check it out online for more information. Click here for Your Guide To Companion Vegetables & Combinations \nAs you work on preparedness and food storage\, remember these words from Elder David A.

SUMMARY:2025 June Preparedness - Preparación para junio
DESCRIPTION:Hello Gilbert Stake! \nWater storage is an important part of being prepared. A good goal is one gallon of water per person per day\, with a minimum of two weeks’ supply per person. That can add up—but don’t let it feel overwhelming. Remember\, “by small and simple means are great things brought to pass” (Alma 37:6). \nThere are many types of containers you can use—just do what works best for you. As we take small steps with faith\, the Lord magnifies our efforts. \nLearn more about how to get started here: \ngilbertprepared.org/water-storage\niwillprepare.com Water Storage \n  \n¡Hola estaca Gilbert! SUMMARY:2025 July Preparedness
DESCRIPTION:Hello Gilbert Stake! \nSpiritual Preparedness blended with Temporal Preparedness: \nElder Ballard\, in a 2014 conference talk spoke of “Family Councils”. Here are a couple of highlights from that talk: \n“Until now\, however\, I have never talked in general conference about the most basic and fundamental—and perhaps the most important—of all councils: the family council. Family councils have always been needed. They are\, in fact\, eternal. We belonged to a family council in the premortal existence\, when we lived with our heavenly parents as their spirit children.” \n“The Church pamphlet entitled Our Family states\, “This council can meet to discuss family problems\, work out finances\, make plans\, support and strengthen [each other]\, and pray for one another and for the family unit.” \nFamily Councils: With Elder Ballard’s council in mind\, a great topic for a family council is a Family Emergency Communication Plan. Here are some thoughts from www.ready.gov for each member of the family to consider: \n“What if something happens and I’m not with my family?” \n“Will I be able to reach them?” \n“How will I know they are safe?” \n“How can I let them know I’m OK?” \n“During a disaster\, you will need to send and receive information from your family. Communication networks\, such as mobile phones and computers\, could be unreliable during disasters\, and electricity could be disrupted. Planning in advance will help ensure that all the members of your household—including children and people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs\, as well as outside caregivers—know how to reach each other and where to meet up in an emergency.” \nThere’s more at: Create Your Family Emergency Communication Plan \nAnd lots of information on the church website: Disaster Planning \nfamily_communication_plan_cards_blank \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:2025 September Preparedness - Preparación para septiembre
DESCRIPTION:Hello Gilbert Stake! – (¡Hola estaca Gilbert! abajo) \nSpiritual Preparedness blended with Temporal Preparedness: Ezekiel 38:7 – Be thou prepared\, and prepare for thyself\, thou\, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee\, and be thou guard unto them. The adversary never stops attacking.  So\, we can never stop preparing!  The more self-reliant we are – temporally\, emotionally\, and spiritually – the more prepared we are to thwart Satan’s relentless assaults.”  President Russell M. Nelson\, “Embrace the Future with Faith”\, Oct 2020 General Conference.  Temporal preparedness is more than food storage. One important topic that doesn’t get as much attention\, but it is vitally important is a Document Kit. What in the world is a document kit? A document kit\, or a disaster supply kit has all your important papers and information. \nDisaster supply kits need to be unique for each individual according to your own needs\, abilities\, and wants. “Be ready” with copies of important documents and cash in small bills in your emergency kits for you and your family to last at least 5 days. BRU Important Documents.pdf – Google Drive (BeReadyUtah.gov) checklist \nAI overview: “In an emergency\, keep copies of vital documents organized and accessible\, including identification (birth certificates\, passports\, driver’s licenses)\, financial records (bank accounts\, tax returns\, insurance policies)\, medical information (insurance cards\, prescriptions\, medical history\, and directives)\, and legal and property documents (wills\, deeds\, powers of attorney). Don’t forget contact lists for family\, doctors\, and utilities\, as well as pet information and a household inventory.” Safeguard Critical Documents and Valuables  (FEMA) checklist. \nThe important thing is\, keep working on being prepared. Don’t let the volumes of it all stop you. If you eat the preparedness elephant one bite at a time\, you’ll get there. Presidente Russell M. Nelson\, “Embrace the Future with Faith”\, Conferencia General de octubre de 2020.

SUMMARY:2025 October: Vegetable Planting & Provident Living
DESCRIPTION:Hello Gilbert Stake\, welcome to October 2025! \nSummer is finally over and the days are beginning to cool down. October means it’s time to plant our winter gardens. Some of the summer plants may still have some life in them\, so by all means let them go if you want them. This is the time for veggies in the lettuce and cabbage families. Peas are still good to go. If planting seeds\, remember it takes about 3 weeks before they are ready to transplant. \nHere is a link for the planting guide for Maricopa County: \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nThe Principle of Preparation \nAs members of the Church\, we know that it is our responsibility to provide for ourselves and our families both in good times and in bad. Part of fulfilling that obligation is making preparations now to face whatever challenges may come our way. President Spencer W. Kimball taught that we must be “anxiously engaged in a positive program of preparation.” It is not enough to hope for the best; we must prepare for it. He explained\, “The Lord will not translate one’s good hopes and desires and intentions into works. Each of us must do that for himself.” \nEmergency Preparedness (churchofjesuschrist.org) \nMay the Lord bless you in your endeavors to live providently. Need help with any or all of these topics\, no problem. Just reach out to your ward’s Preparedness Specialist. SUMMARY:2025 November: Power Preparedness - Preparación energética
DESCRIPTION:This past month\, our valley experienced a couple of big storms. As we all know\, power outages can happen anytime—whether from weather or other unexpected causes. It’s always a good idea to be prepared before they happen! Here are a few helpful tips from the iwillprepare.com website. \nWhat to do BEFORE the Power Goes Out: Power outages are one of the most frequently occurring emergencies. They also frequently accompany many natural and other disasters and emergencies. Long-term power outages may also lead to other utility outages. (i.e. Our water supply depends on pumps powered by electricity. If backup power runs out\, so will the water). \nPrepare for a potential power outage by doing the following: \n\nHave a supply of easy to find flashlights and fresh batteries on-hand.\nProtect your sensitive electronics by having them connected to surge protectors and UPS’s (Uninterruptable Power Supplies).\nHave a supply of potable water and food you don’t have to cook or non-electric cooking supplies so you can cook several days worth of meals. Don’t use BBQ’s or camp stoves indoors. (See Cooking Without Electricity).\n\nWhat to do WHEN the Power Goes Out: \n\nReport the outage to the power company. If localized\, they may not be aware of the outage.\nIf there are downed power lines in the area\, call 911 immediately. Keep people at least 100 feet away. Do not attempt to rescue someone trapped by a downed line. Assume all downed power lines are energized.\nDo not shower during an electrical storm. Lightning can travel through pipes.\nDo not make phone calls using land-lines during an electrical storm. Lightning can travel through the phone lines.\nTurn off or unplug major appliances and most light switches. When the power is restored\, and all electrical devices turn on at the same moment\, may cause an area wide circuit overload and lead to a second power outage.\nBe aware that food in your refrigerator and freezer will spoil quickly without power. If you don’t have a generator to provide backup power. Be prepared to consume or cook what you can quickly before the internal food temperature reaches 40ºF.\nSeek shelter in areas where the power is on if temperatures are extreme or you have particular medical needs.\nKeep the refrigerator closed to extend the life of your food.\nFor extensive or long-term power outages\, listen to a battery or crank powered radio for important updates.\n\nWhat to Do AFTER the Power is Restored: \n\nWait a couple minutes before turning on all lights and appliances following the restoration of power to avoid circuit overload.\nDispose of questionable food from your refrigerator or freezer that has reached internal temperatures of 40ºF or higher.\n\n  \nEl mes pasado\, nuestro valle experimentó un par de grandes tormentas. (Ver Cocinar sin electricidad).\n\nWhat to do WHEN the Power Goes Out: \n\nInforme el corte a la compañía eléctrica.

February is a good time to start planting seeds. For information on what and when to plant\, visit this University of Arizona website: \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nAnother thing you might want to consider as you plant is what plants compliment other plants. These are referred to as “companion plants.” Check online for more information. \nAs you work on preparedness and food storage\, remember these words from Elder David A. Bednar: “Additional aspects of a spiritual foundation for temporal preparedness include acting ‘in wisdom and order’ [Mosiah 4:27]\, which implies a gradual buildup of food storage and savings over time\, as well as embracing ‘small and simple’ means [Alma 37:6]\, which is a demonstration of faith that the Lord will magnify our small but consistent efforts.” SUMMARY:2026 April Preparedness - Preparación para abril
DESCRIPTION:Hopefully\, during the month of March you were able to plan your garden and plant. If not\, don’t despair! It may be too late to plant seeds\, but you still have time to get some plants from a nursery and plant them. Did you know some vegetables and herbs like to be by each other? This is called companion planting. Here is a link to a website that talks about this subject. There are a lot of adds\, but the information is good. Or you can search it out on your own. \nCompanion Planting Chart and Guide for Vegetable Gardens (thespruce.com) \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nOne item that should be at the top of your priority list is 72 hour kits. If you haven’t updated yours in a while\, take some time this month and make sure everything is current and all clothes fit. Keep in mind the kids grow and what was packed six months ago may not fit anymore. If you need help with ideas for putting your kits together or updating\, please check out the 72 hour kit section the website: \nhttps://gilbertprepared.org/72-hour-kits/ \nHere are some great thoughts from Elder Bednar to help us in our spiritual preparedness: \nWe Will Prove Them Herewith | David A. Bednar | October 2020YouTube · General Conference of The Church of Jesus ChristOct 4\, 2020 \n“Some Church members opine that emergency plans and supplies\, food storage\, and 72-hour kits must not be important anymore because the Brethren have not spoken recently and extensively about these and related topics in general conference. But repeated admonitions to prepare have been proclaimed by leaders of the Church for decades. The consistency of prophetic counsel over time creates a powerful concert of clarity and a warning volume far louder than solo performances can ever produce. Just as challenging times reveal inadequacies in temporal preparedness\, so too the maladies of spiritual casualness and complacency inflict their most detrimental effects during difficult trials…Thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line\, precept upon precept\, here a little and there a little; and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts\, and lend an ear unto my counsel\, for they shall learn wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I will give more. I invite each of us to “consider [our] ways” and “examine [ourselves]\, whether [we] be in the faith; [and] prove [our] own selves.” What have we learned during these recent months of lifestyle adjustments and restrictions? What do we need to improve in our lives spiritually\, physically\, socially\, emotionally\, and intellectually? Now is the time to prepare and prove ourselves willing and able to do all things whatsoever the Lord our God shall command us.” \n  \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:2026 June Preparedness - Preparativos para Junio
DESCRIPTION:2026 June Preparedness \nHave you ever had one of those moments where you ask yourself\, “Why did I do that?” or “Why did I say that?” or one more\, “Why didn’t I follow the instructions?”. Let’s focus a little on the last one. We as members of the church have been counseled and instructed for decades to be prepared. We’ve heard it so much and for so long that when we hear the topic our ears turn off. We hope you don’t turn a blind eye and deaf ear this time. There are so many phases of preparedness it is difficult to capture them all here\, in this article. Everyone is at a different location on the preparedness path\, so we will focus on where to start and how to start. Those of you that have started\, please continue reading\, you may find ideas to help you from where you are currently. \nOk\, where do I start? The best place to start is to make a plan\, nothing fancy\, just a basic plan. It can be updated and expanded later\, after you get the hang of things. Plans often start with the what do we have now column and the what do we need column. Just a simple basic inventory. We would like everyone to get started on a three month supply\, but maybe that isn’t feasible for you in your current situation. If finances are tight\, don’t be embarrassed\, be truly grateful and thank Heavenly Father for all that you have.  He loves you and will bless your efforts\, but you have to be putting in the effort. \nThis is how simple it really is. The next time you go to the store and lets say you need a can of refried beans\, put two in the cart. Now when you get home you have an extra can of refried beans. That’s it\, that’s all there is to it. If you do that each time you go to the store and add an extra can or package of one or two things\, you are doing it and moving in the right direction. Don’t try to fill your pantry all at once\, just do small steps at a time. \nI recently read an article in the “Meridian Magazine”\, “You Are Not Too Broke to Prepare”\, by Carolyn Nicolaysen – May 19\, 2026. Here are some ideas she listed to help us in our quest\, “So how do we build food storage? One small step at a time. Do not become discouraged if you cannot fill your shopping cart with pantry items all at once. Consistency matters far more than speed. Consider the following practical suggestions”: \n\nKnow which stores offer rain checks. Always ask for one when shelves are empty of sale items\, though some seasonal products may be excluded.\nAsk whether stores price match competitors. This can save both time and fuel while helping you maximize savings.\nLearn store sales cycles. Grocery stores often begin new sales midweek\, while pharmacy chains may start sales on Sundays. Understanding sale timing can help you secure pantry staples at the best prices.\nSign up for customer rewards programs. Loyalty cards often provide discounts unavailable to nonmembers.\nTrack prices. Keep a notebook or binder with common grocery prices at stores you frequent. Over time\, you will learn what constitutes a true bargain. Involving older children can also teach them wise shopping habits.\nRemember seasonal sales. Many items follow predictable sale patterns. Cranberry sauce\, pumpkin\, and condensed milk\, for example\, are deeply discounted during the holidays but useful year-round.\nUse coupons wisely. Coupons can often be found in newspapers\, weekly mailers\, and local advertisements.\nCook from scratch whenever possible. Homemade bread\, cookies\, soups\, and casseroles are often far less expensive and healthier than packaged convenience foods.\nTake meals and drinks with you when traveling or attending activities. Packing lunches can significantly reduce spending.\nConsider breakfast for dinner. Meals such as eggs\, pancakes\, hash browns\, and fruit are inexpensive\, nutritious\, and family friendly. A dinner of eggs\, hash browns\, applesauce and juice made from scratch costs less than a dollar per person. The benefits\, save money\, no added preservatives\, eggs are a complete protein and kids love it.\nEat dinner at home more often. If you enjoy date nights\, consider eating at home first and going out for dessert or a treat afterward. If you want to eat out occasionally\, find out what nights your favorite hangouts have special deals or if they have hours with reduced pricing.\nLearn basic cooking skills. A few simple techniques can greatly reduce reliance on costly prepared foods. Learn to cook from scratch. Watch cooking shows\, ask skilled friends or family for tips\, and practice a few basics. Homemade meals are often far less expensive than prepared foods.\nSave leftover ingredients. Extra vegetables can often be chopped and frozen for later use in soups\, casseroles\, and stews.\nUse leftovers creatively. Leftover meats can become tacos\, soups\, casseroles\, salads\, or sandwiches instead of being discarded.\nNever turn down free produce. Excess garden vegetables and fruit can often be canned\, frozen\, or shared.\nPrepare extra baked goods and freeze them. Homemade breads\, cakes\, and muffins freeze well and save money later.\nReduce reliance on boxed breakfast cereals. Oatmeal\, eggs\, pancakes\, and toast are far more economical.\nPurchase larger packages when practical. Bulk buying is often more cost effective.\nStretch expensive foods. Instead of serving several strips of bacon or multiple sausage links per person\, cut them into smaller pieces and mix them into eggs or casseroles for flavor\, leaving half for another meal.\nRepackage snacks yourself. Large bags of chips or crackers are often cheaper than individual servings. Repackage into reusable containers for school and work lunches.\nCombine cereals. Mixing less expensive cereals with favorite name brands can reduce costs while maintaining flavor.\nPrepare economical meals several nights a week. Pasta\, soups\, fried rice\, homemade pizza\, and simple casseroles can stretch the food budget considerably.”\n\nHere are some great thoughts from Former Relief Society General President Sister Barbara B. Smith\, to help us in our preparedness. “Life is made up of small daily acts. Savings in food budgets come by pennies\, not only by dollars. Clothing budgets are cut by mending stitch by stitch\, seam by seam. Houses are kept in good repair nail by nail. Provident homes come not by decree or by broad brushstroke. Provident homes come from small acts performed well day after day. When we see in our minds the great vision\, then we discipline ourselves by steady\, small steps that make it happen.” (Ensign\, Nov. 1980\, p. 86.). Here are links for great information for gardening and general preparedness: \n\nCompanion Planting Chart and Guide for Vegetable Gardens (thespruce.com)\nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu)\nhttps://gilbertprepared.org/72-hour-kits/\n\nMay the Lord bless each of us in our efforts as we try to listen and obey. 86). SUMMARY:2026 July Preparedness - Preparativos para Julio
DESCRIPTION:Happy July! \n\n\nHopefully everyone is enjoying the 250th anniversary of our great nation. It was founded on God given principles and special men and women were inspired from on high in order to create this nation. It was the creation of this nation that allowed for the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. \nIn our articles\, we have discussed many topics concerning food storage and preparedness. But one thing we haven’t addressed is what to store all this food storage in. Storage containers are not all the same\, and some are not safe for long term storage\, and some should never be used. Below is information on what can be used and what to always avoid and never use. It’s also important to remember even safe containers have some limitations and best uses. \nSafe Containers \nGlass Bottles: Foods stored in glass should be stored in a dark area. If this is not possible\, store bottles in a cardboard box or wrap in aluminum foil. Light will increase the rate at which food quality is lost. Glass containers are rodent and insect proof and when properly sealed will not allow air or fumes to degrade the products stored. \nMetal cans: Cans are a great storage option\, especially in areas that are prone to flooding. After a flood\, it is easy to disinfect the can while still protecting the food inside. Cans will rust in humid areas and should be stored with care and rotated often under these circumstances. Metal cans are airtight\, as well as rodent and insect proof. \nPlastic buckets or bottles: Only food grade plastic containers should be used for storage. Other plastics have been manufactured using chemicals which can be toxic. If you are unsure\, check with the supplier or manufacturer before storing food. Determined rodents have been known to enjoy a feast which was stored in plastic containers. \nKnow the codes for safe-to-use storage options: \n\nThe Cup and Fork Symbol: This universal logo guarantees the material is safe for food and beverages.\nPlastic Resin Codes: Check the bottom of the container for a triangle recycling symbol. Food-safe plastics are typically marked with numbers 1\, 2\, 4\, or 5.\n1 (PETE): Best for single-use bottles; do not reuse.\n2 (HDPE): Ideal and highly stable for long-term food storage (e.g.\, bulk bins\, milk jugs)\n4 (LDPE): Safe and commonly used for food bags and squeeze bottles.\n5 (PP): Safe\, heat-resistant\, and ideal for reusable containers.\nLook for printed phrases like “Food Grade\,” “FDA Compliant\,” or “USDA Approved.”\n\nKnow what to avoid: \n\nRecycling Codes 3 and 6: Never use containers marked with 3 (PVC) or 6 (Polystyrene) for food storage\, as they can leach toxic chemicals.\nCode 7 (Other) with a BPA Warning: While some polycarbonates are code 7\, they should be avoided unless explicitly labeled “BPA-Free.”\nUnknown or Unmarked Buckets: If you are repurposing a plastic bucket\, avoid it unless it has the cup and fork symbol or “food-grade” printed on it. Buckets used for paints\, chemicals\, or detergents are never safe for food\, even after washing.\n\nMylar bags: Mylar will protect food from contamination from air and other fumes and are light weight for carrying in an emergency. They will protect against light damage. They are very susceptible to rodent damage\, can be easily punctured and if not vacuum sealed “sweating” can occur within the pouch. \nOriginal store packaging: When possible\, food should be stored in the original container. This will preserve the “use by” date and also any preparation instructions. Place items packaged in cardboard in another container such as a bucket to increase protection. Use packing tape to seal the ends of boxes of pastas\, cereals\, and other easily infested items. If an infestation occurs\, the pests cannot get into the protected boxes and if a box came from the manufacturer infested\, then critters cannot get out and infest other items. \nUnsafe Containers \nPlastic bags: Plastic bags meant for trash or garden use have been chemically treated. These chemicals can be toxic. \nPaper: Paper will absorb moisture in the air which can then be transferred to your food\, spoiling it. Pests and rodents love paper\, an easy meal! \nCardboard: A cardboard box is a good place to store items in their original containers but not as your primary container. Cardboard\, like paper\, will absorb moisture in the air and is an easy target for pests. \nWhen repackaging or breaking down bulk items for storage it is important to use a moisture absorbing packet and oxygen absorbing packet. Verify the size of the container does not exceed the amount the packets can absorb. Packets come in different sizes\, but you can add 2 packets to make up the difference if you are unsure. \nAs always\, here are links for great information for gardening and general preparedness: \nCompanion Planting Chart and Guide for Vegetable Gardens (thespruce.com) \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nhttps://gilbertprepared.org/72-hour-kits/  \nMay the Lord bless each of us in our efforts as we try to listen and obey. \n— \n¡Feliz julio! \nComo siempre\, aquí hay enlaces para obtener excelente información sobre jardinería y preparación general: \nCuadro complementario de plantación y guía para huertos (thespruce.com) \nCalendario de siembra de hortalizas para el condado de Maricopa (arizona.edu) \nCompanion Planting Chart and Guide for Vegetable Gardens (thespruce.com) \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nhttps://gilbertprepared.org/72-hour-kits/ \nQue el Señor nos bendiga a cada uno de nosotros en nuestros esfuerzos al tratar de \n\n\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:2026 August Preparedness Canning
DESCRIPTION:2026 August Preparedness – Happy August! \nHopefully everyone is enjoying a safe summer. As the summer rolls on\, it is time to start thinking about how to preserve the extra bounty from our home gardens\, or getting the summers best\, in season\, fruits and vegetables from the various markets. \nSometimes it’s not just the fruits and vegetables we want to can. Perhaps you would like to can meats of differing types: beef\, poultry\, pork or seafoods. These are all great to have on your shelf because they are fully cooked when opened\, and ready to use. This is such a convenient time saver! Another great advantage is if the power goes out\, you don’t need to worry about losing all your expensive meat that’s in the freezer. \nFor those that are unfamiliar with home canning\, it really isn’t that hard. If done properly there is no need to fear the quality of the food\, AND you know what is and isn’t in it. Stocking up on fruits\, vegetables and meats during holiday sales is so rewarding because it is a great way to boost your food storage. \nThere are two attachments with the newsletter this month. One is the basic guidelines for pressure canning and the other has the basic guidelines for water bath canning. What you are canning determines which method to use. Neither one is particularly hard\, just the right tools\, time and effort are needed. \nClick here for Pressure Canning \nClick here for Water Bath Canning \nIf you have questions or concerns about any of these things\, please reach out to your Ward Preparedness Specialist. If you don’t have one\, contact your Relief Society President or Elders Quorum President. \nAs always\, here are links for great information for gardening and general preparedness: \nhttps://gilbertprepared.org/food-storage/canning/ \nCompanion Planting Chart and Guide for Vegetable Gardens (thespruce.com) \nVegetable Planting Calendar for Maricopa County (arizona.edu) \nMay the Lord bless each of us in our efforts as we try to listen and obey. \nBob and Shelby Jarman – Gilbert Stake Preparedness Specialists \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print
